It was afternoon when Tymlor met his Clockwork Companions at the Golden Chip and informed them that, “Iwo of the Cobalt Soul suspects Kruuk the baker is involved in the illegal sale of dangerous magic items, but needs proof before involving the Hand of Ord. Iwo gave us 250 gold coins to take the job, and promised another 250 for bringing them proof that Old Man Kruuk is selling magic items on the black market and another 250 for each magic item confiscated. They assume Kruuk does all his black-market business after sundown, when the bakery closes and suggests we approach the place after dark.”
After Tik returned from the newspaper, they decided to visit the bakery early and ask Kruuk about acquiring blackmarket items. Sarielle entered the bakery disguised as a human and inquired about replacing her sword with a more deadly variety. Kruuk told her to come back after sundown. Leery entered with her and remained after she left.
While the companions waited outside, Kruuk entered the backroom and retrieved a long box, which allowed Leery to see inside the room.
ACHU used his amulet to turn Tik invisible, Tymlor cast Guidance on Tik, and the kenku picked the lock to the reardoor into the backroom. Soon after, he emerged with a shorter box and described the room as being like a torture chamber. Tymlor’s detect magic didn’t indicate any magic and they weren’t able to open the box, so they put it in Sarielle’s Bag of Holding.
Just before sundown a red-robed gnome walked into the bakery and Sarielle followed soon after, having collected coin to purchase magic items.
Kruuk presented a red-tinted longsword for auction and Sarielle began bidding against the gnome. Meanwhile, Tik and Tymlor entered from the back, picking locks through the courtyard, into the bedroom, and finally arriving in the bakery where they found the gnome about to attack Sarielle.
Tymlor entered casting Slow, but only the baker was impacted. The gnome blasted Sarielle with red energy. Tik summoned a Shadow Spawn that killed Kruuk. Tymlor tried to hit the gnome with Mind Whip, but she deflected most of the psychic energy back at him. Sarielle drew her sword and flew into a rage, attacking the gnome. Tymlor rammed the gnome with a Flaming Sphere. The gnome tried to flee, but ran into ACHU, who caught her with Hold Person. Tik hit her with an Eldritch Blast. Sarielle cut her down while she was held.
After searching the bakery and finding Kruuk’s personal papers, 100 gold coins, and the gnomes five peridots, the Clockwork Companions collected the contraband sword and notified Iwo, who arrived soon after and gave them 250 gold coins for providing the evidence. After some discussion, Tymlor decided they would keep the ruidium sword.
Realizing that Sarielle’s sword was the cause of her rage, Tymlor informed ACHU, who cast remove curse. Freed from the cursed sword, Sarielle took the ruidium sword.
