In the morning, the Clockwork companions headed to the wizard’s apartment, a three-story structure.
Sarielle posed as a university student and interviewed the residents. On the second floor, they met the talkative Katerina. On the third floor, the wizard, Laurin Ophidas, cracked open the door just enough for Leery to sneak in before he abruptly shut it in Sarielle’s face.
The Clockwork companions waited outside until Laurin left. Once he was out of sight, ACHU kept watch while the others went up to the apartment where Leery let them in.
As soon as Tik entered the bedroom, the floor was charged with electricity, shocking Tik, Tymlor, Sarielle, and Leery. The fey familiar disappeared.
Tymlor cast Detect Magic and was drawn to a drawer in the bedroom. Inside was a lockbox. Tymlor used his thieves' tools to open the complex lock and found three emeralds (worth 50 gp each) and 15 platinum coins inside. Not detecting any other magic in the apartment, he cast Identify and determined that the box was immune to mundane damage.
They decided to wait in the apartment and it was over an hour before Tymlor’s owl alerted him that Laurin was returning after seeing a half-orc in River District.
They went downstairs and engaged Laurin in the lobby. Laurin called out for the Hand of Ord and tried to flee, but Tymlor encased him in a field of Momentary Stasis until ACHU captured him with Hold Person.
After using his Sending Stone to inform Iwo of their progress, Tymlor flagged down three nearby members of the Hand of Ord and explained that the Cobalt Soul had asked them to investigate the wizard and that they had proof he was a cultist of Zehir. Opening Laurin’s bag, they found the book Leery had spotted: A Guide to Worshipping Zehir.
The guard in charge, Antonio III, said they were taking Laurin to their headquarters in the Ord Bastion in the Sand Herald District.
The Clockwork companions headed Headed to the Cobalt Soul to update Iwo, who said he may have an object that the Vermilion Dream would be interested in. He said he would contact them in a few days.
When they were leaving, he spoke with Tymlor privately, “Thank you for waiting Tymlor. I'm sorry about before but I had to know if your companions could be trusted. I can tell you a little bit about what is going on. There is a new type of magical substance that has been making its way around on the black markets. Only so much is known and what is known is closely guarded. What we do know is it is some kind of red crystalline infusion that can be put into things such as weapons. We know that it's being sought after by several groups and we worry about it because we don't know a lot about it.”
“I appreciate your confidence, Iwo,” Tymlor replied. “All the signs seem to indicate a relation to Ruidus. Is that your understanding?”
“It has been nicknamed Ruidium,” Iwo added, “but right now we don't have any evidence of links aside from the color being a similar crimson.”
Once Tymlor left, he joined in companions and they all headed to the Suncut Bazaar and found the gem merchant who had provided them with diamonds. After some negotiating, they paid 200 gold coins for Sarielle’s enchanted longsword and 10 gp worth of charcoal, incense, and herbs). The merchant suggested they try Mystic Pursuits for arcane items they might need.
