The Daring Friends returned to the Toll House first thing in the morning. Dameron used Locate Object to help Captain Soranna find the sunken boat, which he located not far downstream.
After she pulled the boar up to the shore, she shared with them that the Council, especially Iormel, had wanted someone blamed for the previous murder, when she was brand new to the job of Captain. She also mentioned that Delora used to be a ranger.
The Daring Friends then made their way to the eastern edge of town where Dameron used Locate Object to find boots like the ones Avarthel had worn. He was drawn to Iormel’s Warehouse. They engaged the councilman, who was immediately aggressively reluctant to answer any questions, and had his man Rulthus lead them away.
They alerted Captain Soranna about their suspicion of Iormel, but she said there was nothing she could do without the council’s blessing, adding that he usually left the warehouse at night.
Dameron visited his farm with Balthasar and they found the three outlaw bandits, Aelfryd, Corr, and Dyll, waiting there. Dameron gave them some food and explained that he would try to acquire supplies to rebuild the farm, where they could stay.
They said they had seen the goats across the road to the south. Scouting the area, Balthasar found goblin tracks along with a booted track to the south, leading toward the Borderwood.
They waited for nightfall to enter Iormel’s Warehouse. Balthasar broke his lockpicks trying to pick the lock on the gate, so they had to climb over the wall instead. Then Dameron broke their newly purchased crowbar trying to enter the warehouse, but they managed to get inside.
Once inside, Dameron cast Locate Object again and was led downstairs to a footlocker in the cellar. Meanwhile, Camwise headed toward Iormel’s office and began searching through the papers he found there before joining his companions in the cellar. The cellar was filled with barrels and wine racks. Dameron was just about to open the footlocker when Camwise warned him of a trap on the footlocker, pointing out the cord on its underside as well as one connected to the lid.
Just then Iormel’s cackling could be heard from the stairway. “You shouldn’t go poking your noses around!" Then he slammed and barricaded the door. In the silence, they could hear a hissing sound of gas in the cellar.
