July 5-6
In the morning, the Daring Friends reached their destination and moored their boat. The roadblock was to the north, but they headed to a skirmish to the south.
As they reached the skirmish, they found soldiers fighting off goblins and ogres. Some of the goblins were hiding in the bushes and trees. The soldiers appeared to be in bad shape, so the Daring Friends rushed into the fray.
Dameron cast Bless on his companions. Jaervellios climbed a try and began sniping at the enemies. Gruffudd cast Spike Growth, tearing up an ogre. Dameron’s Lightning Bolt took down many goblins and wounded the ogre. Gruffudd conjured a giant wild boar that smashed through the ogre. Balthasar tore into the southern group of goblins. Seeing that the cave ogre was demolishing the soldiers around it, Dameron hit it with a Guiding Bolt. They recognized one of the soldiers as Zazz, the bandit captain, who smashed the cave ogre with his morning star. A large, green draconic creature flew down near Balthasar, who attached it with his Frostbrand and Impsoing Glare. The Greenspawn Razorfiend breathed poison on the drakkenwhyte, killing the nearby goblins. Dameron attacked the goblins in the trees with his Spiritual Weapon and Sacred Flames, bringing them down one by one. Gruffudd used his staff to hit the Greenspawn Razorfiend and his boar charged into the cave ogre.
Soon the last ogre and the Greenspawn Razorfiend were dead and Dameron slew all the fleeing goblins but one, which Gruffudd ran down on his giant boar.
Dameron cast Mass Healing Word on his companions, Zazz, and, Loric, the only other remaining soldier. Zazz and Loric said they needed to report back to the Warduke in Songvale, but Dameron and Gruffudd were able to convince them to join their mission to destroy the roadblock with some more healing.
After a short rest, the Daring Friends swung by their boat to pick up Camwise and headed north to the roadblock.
It was afternoon when they approached the roadblock. Camwise cast Mage Armor on Gruffudd, who transformed into an owl to scout ahead.
When he returned, he described a captain, a preacher, an ogre, two squads, and archers on the walls of a log wall.
They were almost 600 feet away when archers began shooting, hitting Balthasar and Zazz. Concerned about the distance they needed to make, they headed back to their boat. Dameron and Balthasar were hit with arrows as they fled.
When they reached their boat, they bandaged their wounds and took the boat upriver, passing within sight of the roadblock. They convinced Zazz and Loric to travel back to the roadblock and wait for an opportune time to strike. Once they could see the roadblock, Camwise cast a Major Image of the flag of Brindol flying from the mast.
Two squads, an archer, their commander, and an ogre, gave chase from the roadblock. Dameron cast Bless as the archers began shooting at each other.
Camwise cast Fireball and Magic Missiles, Gruffudd cast Spike Growth, and Dameron used his Lightning Wand. Balthasar engaged the first squad but was eventually surrounded and fell. Gruffud revived Balthasar.
Once the Red Hand forces were defeated, the Daring Friends returned to their boat and took it further upstream where they rested for the night. In the morning, they felt empowered to return to the diminished blockade.
Dameron shared a Premonition from the previous night of one of the prisoners being killed and another taken to the Black Fens.
The Daring Friends snuck up to the blockade from the north under cover of Gruffudd’s Pass Without Trace.
They entered the makeshift fort, but the enemy was waiting and they were soon engaged with a squad of hobgoblins, their hobgoblin warpriest, an ogre, and hobgoblin sharpshooters all around. Balthasar engaged them head-on, while Gruffudd provided cover from the archers with his Wind Wall, Dameron used his Wand of Lightning Bolts and Spirit Guardians, Camwise shot Fire Bolts, Magic Missiles, and hit with Shocking Grasp. Jaervellios tried to climb to a tower to shoot arrows but wound up engaged with multiple sharpshooters. Dameron fell unconscious briefly. Camwise went down twice and had to be revived. A hobgoblin tried to take Camwise hostage, but Dameron hit it with a Crushing Haymaker, knocking its head off.
The last hobgoblin surrendered and was interrogated by Balthasar while Camwise cast Detect Thoughts and Dameron watched closely. They learned that the prisoners were a dead wode-elf, whose body was still present, and Watt the mage, who was taken to the Blackfens. Wyrmlord Sarvith is a goblin. The Greenspawn Razorfiend are heralds of Takhisis. Turgarun is one of Azarr Kul’s enforcers. Takhisis is also known as The Great Queen and The Five Great Dragons.
Gruffudd retrieved the body of the wode-elf and brought it to a grassy clearing where he used his staff to cast Raise Dead. When she rose, Liolkya explained that she is an elf of the Wych and they had been assessing the situation outside the wode’s borders and were surprised by Greenspawn Razorfiends and later captured by hobgoblins.
Searching the compound, they found notes mentioning various allies, including Hobgoblins of the Iron Shadow and a spy named Miha, and that Skather Black Scales had passed through on 7/1.
Pressing Jaervellios, Gruffudd was able to learn that Liolkya hates him because of the Ghostlord, which is linked to him being a binder.
They sent Zazz and Loric away to recruit fortifications for the compound to use against the Red Hand. It was midafternoon when they retrieved Corr and Dyll, stashed their boat, and headed northwest to find Watt and escort Liolkya to her camp in the Blackfens.
It was evening when the Daring Friends saw a vast web of trees off to the side in the marsh. They found the lower half of a hobgoblin that had been ripped apart by poisonous fangs. A moment later they were attacked by four Greenspawn Leapers followed by a Greenspawn Razorfiend, which were all put down without incident.
Liolkya pointed out a rusty iron coffer on a nearby island. Inside, Camwise was able to Identify a Ring of Protection, a Headband of Insight, a Dancing Rapier, and an Ioun Stone of Reserve.
As Camwise was trying on the ring, Liolkya looked up to the sky with a smile as they heard the sound of wings flapping. Approaching fast were three giant owls, each with an elven rider.
