In the morning, the Daring Friends set off on their folding boat to Lordrhest. Dameron shared a premonition he had as dawn came: “Not every foe is as they seem, those that walk in shadow may aim for the light.”
As they rowed up the river, Balthasar sensed something stalking them and saw a glimpse of black scales on the shore. Moments later, Balthasar was struck in the leg with an arrow. They tracked the assailant to a nearby island. Balthasar swam toward the island while Dameron, casting Blur and Arcane Muscles, rowed the boat. Camwise worked on casting Clairvoyance. Dameron was shot with an arrow and used his antitoxin to cure the poison. As they approached the island, Watt cast Fireball and was hit with an arrow as the assailant Rezyrius the black Drakkenwhyte was revealed. Two Greenspawn Leapers attacked the Rezyrius. Jaervellios caught them all in an Entangle spell. Dameron hit them all with a Lightning Bolt. Gruffudd used his staff to cast Lesser Restoration on Watt who tossed another fireball at the entangled enemies causing one of the Leapers to explode in a puff of poison. Balthasar engaged Rezyrius. More Greenspawn Leapers emerged from the waters, one of them dropping Watt until he was revived by Dameron’s Mass Healing Word and again by Gruffudd. Rezyrius surrendered and the last of the Greenspawn Leapers were defeated. Rezyrius revealed that he was sent by Azarr Kul to kill the Daring Friends and that he and another had stolen the Ghostlord’s phylactery and delivered it to Saarvith and his wyrm Regiriax. He said many of the buildings on the outskirts of Lordrhest were already plundered and ruined, but the lizardfolk in the center revere Regiriax who hunts in the area. Miha the spy is a shapechanger. He shared what he knew of the Ghostlord’s defenses. Gruffud allowed Regiriax to chop off his hand to bring to Azarr Kul as a trophy. Using his Clairoyoyance, Camwise detected ghostly presences inhabiting an area that must have once been a settlement on the outskirts of Lordrhest. They took a short rest before continuing on toward Lordrhest.
