Red Hand of Doom - Session 4: The Barghest

June 21

In the morning, Speaker Wiston approached the Daring Friends to ask for their help with trouble around town. He raised concerns about the hunters gone missing in Borderwood and the murder of Kellen Shadowtuft’s daughter. They promised to help and, after a quick stop at Jarrett’s Sundries to pick up a component pouch for Camwise, were soon headed to Borderwood.

After entering the woods, Balthasar found some animal trails that they had followed for an hour when they found a body. Dameron recognized it as his old friend Leah, a hunter in the area.

Examining the body, Dameron discovered she had been dead for about two weeks, and was killed by unnatural teeth and claws, some of the wounds meant to inflict pain, and subsequently eaten.

Balthasar found two sets of tracks, the first of a single four-legged beast and the more recent of goblins.

Following the four-legged beast tracks, they soon arrived at a stream flowing from a cave.

Scouting the cave, Balthasar found three Black Dagger goblins beseeching a bone statue for vengeance and a return to their home in the mountains. A barghest emerged from behind the statue demanding more souls and eventually barfed out seven little goey bundles of goblin offspring.

Balthasar emerged from the cave and they prepared their ambush, Dameron providing them with St. Aster’s blessing.

The three goblins emerged from the cave and threw the bundles into the stream. Seven baby goblins emerged from the stream and they all began to depart.

Funguy leaped out from behind them, Balthasar shot his bow from up in a tree, Dameron cast Spiritual Weapon and Sacred Fame, Camwise cast Fire Bolts, and the goblins were all soon dead, including the swarm of babies.

They rushed into the cave and were soon engaged with the barghest. Camwise Enlarged Funguy, who flanked the fiend with Balthasar. Dameron hit it with a Guided Bolt, his Spiritual Weapon, and Sacred Flames while Camwise hit it with Fire Bolts. Extremely bloody and battered, the fiend disappeared before it was finished.

Searching the area, they found tributes including a pearl, a breastplate, a bottle, a book, and various gems.

After gathering the valuables and destroying the statue, they returned to Leah’s body and gave her a proper burial.

When they returned to Drellin’s Ferry and updated Speaker Wiston, he was grateful and rewarded them with a Bead of Tracking.
