June 18
After Watt swore in the name of St. Aster that he had no intention of robbing and stealing, or worse, and that he was only interested in what was below the tower, we returned his belongings to him and agreed to let him accompany us below.
At the bottom of a circular stone staircase, we found a circular chamber with four doors evenly distributed around the outer walls. On the walls between each door were braziers, which Watt lit up. The southern door appeared to have been smashed open from the inside, so we entered finding a sarcophagi topped by a carving of a woman in priestly robes, flanked by two chests. The eastern wall was collapsed, revealing a natural cavern beyond.
Funguy and Balthasar warned of Yellow Mold throughout the chamber, which Camwise neutralized with his Fire Bolts. Funguy smashed open the locks on the chests revealing coins in one and moldy ruined paper in the other.
Exploring the natural cavern, Camwise fell into a hole and was stuck until Balthasar and Dameron could lift him out. The passage connected to the tomb behind the eastern door, which similarly contained a sarcophagi, topped by a carving of a monk, a single chest, and numerous jars and pots. Funguy was poisoned while trying to open the chest, so the companions decided to return to the tower for a brief rest.
Feeling somewhat recovered, the companions returned down the stairs. Noticing that Watt was examining the walls, Dameron inspected them himself and pointed out some carvings. Watt pulled out some paper and took some rubbings. He explained that the four buried here were heroes from Lordrhest known as Fangs of the Dragon, who had stymied the remnants of a Moaardian invasion. He eagerly returned to the east tomb where he revealed lay the Winged Scythe, a servant of the Harrow Schaftord the Guide.
Meanwhile, Camwise had cast Detect Magic and detected abjuration and evocation magic from the north door and abjuration and necromancy from both sarcophagi. Funguy collected all the coins from the chest.
Opening the chest in the east tomb, Funguy found three vials a sickle that radiated necromancy magic. One of the vials contained a purple-tinted liquid that radiated transmutation magic, the second was a red healing potion which Balthasar immediately handed to Camwise, and the last was green.
Meanwhile, Balthasar had opened the western door, revealing a specter whose scream put a fright into Funguy. Watt also let out a scream as his head was smashed by a possessed Dameron’s warhammer.
As Funguy fled from the specter, Watt fled from Dameron until Camwise cast Sleep, but only put Watt to sleep leaving Dameron about to pulverize the wizard. Then the Warpriest exorcised the ghost within and regained his agency. Meanwhile, Funguy had jumped into the monk’s sarcophagi and snatched its holy symbol out of its cold dead hands causing the ghost to return to its body.
Returning to the sarcophagi, Dameron caught site of the specter in the hall and evaporated it with a Guided Bolt. Funguy emerged from the sarcophagi and surrounded the ghost along with Balthasar and Dameron, the latter using the newly found sickle against the ghost. Camwise woke Watt from his slumber and they both began pelting the ghost, and it was Camwise’s Fire Bolt that finished it off.
Watt hurriedly approached the sarcophagi, suggesting that the creature must be bound, getting Camwise to retrieve organs from the nearby jars. Watt began chanting out a ritual until the mummified body in the sarcophagi began to rise. When Dameron realized that Watt was raising the dead, he swung his sickle at Watt but missed. Balthasar, Camwise, and Funguy interposed themselves between Dameron and Watt, trying to reach some mutual understanding. When it was clear that none was to be had, they allowed Watt to depart with his mummy companion.
They soon returned to the west tomb and opened the chest there, discovering a tapestry of a naked woman riding a lion while shooting arrows from a bow at random creatures and a statue of a naked man with a serpent coiled at its feet. Inside the sarcophagi was a well-preserved woman with armor and a short bow.
In the south tomb, they opened the sarcophagi revealing a well-preserved warrior woman with a magic necklace of teeth and bones. After Balthasar took the short bow and Funguy took the necklace, they all returned to the tower and closed the passage to the tombs. They noted that one of the bandits who had been bound had since escaped.
Recovering their mule, they returned to Drellin’s Ferry.
On the way, just outside of town, they found an empty chest that looked like it had just been dug up. Nearby was a vial that Dameron accidentally stepped on and crushed in the dark.
Back at the Green Apple Inn, the Daring Friends shared their tale while Camwise shook everyone’s hand, noting that two of the patrons’ hands were dirty: Sergeant Hirsk and a rough-looking young man named Atton.
They also learned that one of the daughters of Kellin Shadowtuft, who runs the Old Bridge Inn, was murdered!
