In the morning, the Daring Friends felt much better. Protected by his Monastic Austerity, Dameron cast Transfer Exhaustion, absorbing some of the fatigue from Camwise, who began investigating the various components and arcanum, casting Detect Magic and Identify when necessary.
Dameron recalled a vision for St Aster: “Goblin and dragon share a bond, but neither's loyalty to the Red Hand is as undying as that which rests within the sodden hoard.” While examining the non-magical chest, it revealed itself to be a Mimic and attacked. It was quickly defeated and Camwise cast Scrying on the Black Bolt, finding them in the church of St Gregory. Camwise and Watt had spent most of the day exploring the tower and figuring out how to open the portal when Jaervellios warned of a dragon flying overhead outside the tower. Dameron cast Aid and they all exited the tower and prepared for the dragon’s arrival. As the dragon approached, Dameron cast Aid while Camwise and Watt cast Mirror Image. Gruffudd called out that he saw the lizardfolk approaching and cast Call lightning, blasting the nearest squad. The three squads closed in on Gruffudd, Dameron, and Balthasar. From the dragon’s back, the Wyrmlord shot Gruffudd, knocking him unconscious. Camwise cast slow on the two nearest squads. Jaervellios shot the Wyrmlord with an arrow. Dameron blasted two squads with a Lightning Bolt. As one of the squads descended on Dameron, he lost concentration on Bless. Balthasar largely resisted the dragon’s acid breath. Camwise decimated the two nearest squads with a Thunder Bolt. Dameron destroyed all the remnants of the two nearest squads leaving only a single lizardfolk. Watt hit the dragon and Wyrmlord with a Fireball. The dragon swooped down near Gruffudd with Balthasar dashing after it when Camwise Banished it, dropping the Wymlord to the ground nearby. Dameron killed the last lizardfolk in the squad and cast Healing Word on his companions, reviving Gruffudd. Watt hit the Wyrmlord with an Acid Arrow. Gruffudd cast Thunderwave on a resisting Wyrmlord who leaped into the water and swam away. The last squad of lizardfolk bashed Camwise with their clubs. The dragon reappeared and Balthasar engaged with it, slashing it with his sword. Camwise hit the wyrmlord with Magic Missiles. Jaervellios slew the wyrmlord with arrows. Dameron waded into the water and blasted with a Lightning Bolt, decimating the last lizardfolk squad and scorching the dragon. Watt killed one of the four remaining lizardfolk. Moving away from the dragon, Gruffudd healed himself and blasted the dragon with a Fire Bolt. The last three lizardfolk swarmed around Dameron, clubbing him. Balthasar continued to slash at the stunned dragon. Dameron hit the dragon with a Guiding Bolt. Watt killed one of the lizardfolk Magic Missiles. Jaervellios shot the last lizardfolk with an arrow. Dameron hit the dragon with a Shattering Barrage. Watt finished the dragon with a Fire Bolt. Balthasar retrieved the Wyrmlord’s corpse from the marsh, they searched the bodies of the fallen and harvested what they could from the dragon’s corpse. Dameron Transferred Exhaustion from Camwise, alleviating his strife so he could continue investigating the contents of the tower. Camwise shared the results of his scrying: In a large cathedral, a man was confessing to many murders to a priest of St Gregory and was forgiven by the priest. Then an acolyte hands a missive to the priest that reads the Baron no longer requires his services. Then the acolyte produces a dagger and stabs the priest in the chest and kills him. The acolyte was Jared, The Black Bolt and the man confessing was the warduke. The two of the left the cathedral together.
